how far can you go traveling without spending money

I am so curious to try this thing long time ago but didnt have a chance yet but now it's a time.I'm going to Chiang Mai then Pai and possibly will cross to Laos.I am traveling with a tent and in the buddist world you can get a meal for free at the temple though so i might have to try that.
